The Medical Travel Solution

It is no secret that health care in the U.S. has become unaffordable for more than 100 million Americans. Now health travel, or medical tourism provides a solution for those seeking quality affordable health care - in some cases, for example the modern Hospital Angeles Tijuana, just a domestic flight away.

Each year tens of thousands of people travel abroad for high quality health care at savings of up to 80% over U.S. prices. The Health Travel Guides provider network of doctors, hospitals and medical clinics is qualified through a rigorous 9-step credentialing process, and features many deeply experienced, board-certified and U.S.-trained surgeons performing abdominoplasty, liposuction and other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures.

Our services include an extensive international call center operation with more than 50 multilingual health travel guides who assist more than one million travelers every year.

What is Gastric Band Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is the surgical reduction of stomach volume. The two procedures practiced most frequently are gastric bypass and gastric banding. Both of these procedures are FDA-approved and have been practiced in the United States and Mexico for many years.

The gastric band procedure entails the surgeon reducing the size of the stomach by strapping an adjustable silicone prosthetic device around the upper stomach. The band thus creates a smaller pouch that fills quickly and allows food to slowly empty, creating a feeling of fullness and decreasing appetite in the patient.

There are several well-known brand names associated with gastric band surgery. The LAP-BAND® System is the brand name of an FDA-approved adjustable band system by Allergan, Inc. Realize® Band is the brand name of an FDA-approved adjustable band system by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc, a Johnson & Johnson company. Health Travel Guides works only with gastroenterologist surgeons who are proctors for these manufacturers.

The gastric band procedure is frequently performed through laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is performed through very small incisions in the abdomen, resulting in less pain and scarring, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and reduced risk of internal organ damage and infection when compared to the traditional open incision technique.

Studies indicate that over a 5-year period, weight loss outcome for gastric band and gastric bypass is similar. It is important that the gastric band patient plan with the surgeon and a nutritionist to ensure successful long-term weight loss and management. Your Mexico surgical team will always include a physician nutritionist.

There are many types of obesity surgery. Not all patients are candidates for laparoscopic surgery. Your surgeon will help you determine which is right for you based on your BMI, medical condition and lifestyle.

As with any surgery, weight loss surgery poses risks that should be fully discussed with your surgeon.
